So, T3 has come down a bit in price to the point that it's viable to use one just because it's something new and different. That being said, I don't think they'll ever get to the point to where they're 'worth the price'. Assuming strict T2/best named (where applicable) fits, most T3 setups run around 1.2-1.4b depending on ship type and subsystem combo.
Assuming that they'll eventually reach an assembled total price of around 2-300m (which will probably never happen), what good are T3 ships when compared to the existing ships that do existing jobs? How do T3 ships stack up?
T3 ships have one unique thing that no other ship has: nullifier subsystems that allow T3 ships to escape bubbles. This, coupled with a CovOps Cloak makes them very unique, and the fact that they can have a very respectable tank and decent DPS while fitting the two aforementioned subsystems gives them some real value as useful ships instead of just pure novelty ships.
The above notwithstanding, if you're using a T3 ship in any other configuration you're just wasting your time and ISK because there is always another type of ship that does the job much better and for far less ISK than whatever particular T3 configuration you're using. Yes, you may have to use a battleship to get performance greater than a T3 ship, but when you're looking at a ship that costs over a billion ISK as a basic hull then battleships are definitely valid options as a replacement when considering price/performance issues.
One interesting note is that a T3 ship can perform a wide variety of tasks by swapping out it's various subsystems, and while the ship itself may not be the best at its job it doesn't require the player to train up an entirely new skill tree in order to use the T3 ship in another capacity (recon, logistics, hac-like setups etc.).
In theory a person with far fewer skillpoints could have most of the flexibility of someone with more skillpoints by using a T3 ship and modifying it for different jobs.
Next up- comparing the four T3 ships...

Edited by: murder one on 09/07/2009 21:16:39 I'm interested to hear from players who have a large number of kills with their T3 ships. What configs do you find useful? Are you using the T3 ships much differently than existing ships or are your regular tactics sufficient? Are there ways that you're using your T3 ships that you wouldn't normally consider using your other ships in that manner? If so, why is this?
